Montessori Inspired Toys

There's no such thing as “Montessori toys,” however, there are toys that are more closely aligned with the learning philosophy of Montessori that we recommend to use at home. Whereas Materials used in a classroom setting developed by the founder of the method - Maria Montessori is different from such Montessori Inspired Toys. You should check out our Montessori Materials Range if you wish to shop for classroom or homeschooling purposes. There are key principles that make a toy 'more Montessori' inspired than another.

Characteristics of a Montessori-aligned toy

Based on real life.

Before the age of six, your child’s brain is relatively incapable of distinguishing fantasy from reality. Montessori Toys (practical life tools) are a wonderful way to help your child learn real life skills that every one needs as they grow. Buttoning and lacing toys, scissors for cutting, toys that require sizing or sequencing - these are all fantastic opportunities for children to learn real life skills.

Natural Materials

Montessori Toys are made from natural materials. Montessori toys are typically made from natural materials such as wood, wicker, cotton, metal, and glass. Beyond their educational value, toys made of these materials provide a multi-sensory experience for the child.

Simplicity- A Montessori Toy will focus on one skill at a time, aims at the development of one particular area.  So that they don’t overwhelm the children’s minds and allow them to fully understand the purpose of the toy.

What are Montessori Toys?

Montessori toys are educational tools designed to align with the Montessori teaching method. This method emphasizes hands-on, self-directed learning where children can explore and discover at their own pace. Montessori toys are typically made from natural materials like wood and focus on simplicity, allowing children to fully engage with the toy and learn through play. These toys often target specific skills such as fine motor development, problem-solving, and sensory perception.

Why are Montessori Toys Better?

Promote Independence: These toys are designed to encourage children to explore and learn independently, fostering self-confidence and self-discipline.
Enhance Focus and Concentration: Montessori toys often involve tasks that require concentration and patience, helping children to develop these essential skills.
Support Natural Development: By being aligned with the stages of a child's development, Montessori toys cater to their evolving needs and abilities.
Encourage Creative Thinking: The simplicity and open-ended nature of these toys stimulate imagination and creativity.
Durable and Safe: Made from natural materials, Montessori toys are usually more durable and safer for children, reducing exposure to harmful chemicals found in some plastic toys.

Where to Start Using Montessori Toys?

Identify Your Child's Interests and Developmental Stage: Choose toys that align with your child's current interests and developmental needs.
Introduce One Toy at a Time: Allow your child to fully explore and engage with each toy before introducing a new one.
Create a Prepared Environment: Set up a learning space that is tidy, organized, and accessible to the child, fostering a sense of order and independence.
Observe and Follow Your Child: Pay attention to how your child interacts with the toys and be ready to introduce new challenges as they master each one.

Recommended Montessori Toys (by Age)

0-12 Months: Soft cloth books, wooden rattles and sensory balls.
1-2 Years: Shape sorters, stacking rings and simple puzzles.
3-4 Years: Building blocks, counting beads and practical life tools.
5-6 Years: Alphabet and number boards, arts and crafts supplies and science kits.
7+ Years: Complex puzzles, DIY project kits and advanced construction sets.

Montessori Toys vs. Ordinary Toys: Key Differences

Purpose of Education

Montessori toys play a crucial role in Montessori classrooms, acting as the primary materials children engage with. These particular toys are meant to help the child acquire skills and character building, as well as help in the child's senses, motor skills, and intellect. Regular toys are designed to suit the liking of the children without an end goal of education, Montessori toys have a clear and arranged educational purpose. They bring order to the systematic development of a child's senses according to the Montessori way.

Materials and Design

Montessori toys are generally of natural wood, with simple, clean colors, and objects suitable for the traces of life related to the child. It uses real objects so that the child can build a sense of real touch and scale by preparing it physiologically and psychologically. For example, in the language area, there could be the use of real fruits and animal specimens, while in the sensory area, the so-called "number rods" with colour contrasts of conspicuous differences that children can see from a considerable distance allow children to distinguish numbers easily.

On the other hand, usual toys generally attempt to achieve a near-real-world experience by the use of bright and detailed colouring and at times incorporate electronic features of lights and sounds that are not suited to children of a particular age. There is no general design criterion; they depend on how to make a child interested, without observing educational principles.

Operation and Usability

Montessori toys are built on the principle of "sensitive periods" in the development of the child, meaning that great consideration is taken in age appropriateness. Each toy is to be used alone or in a small group, having both a direct purpose of education and an indirect one. In the practical life area, for example, there would be a scooping activity: the focus would be on a child's enhancement of fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and strength—but quite indirectly, since it would at the same time prepare the child for the use of tools just as simple as a spoon.

The activities of Montessori toys go from simple to complex, with specific sequences and steps, which the children have to overcome for them to proceed to the next level. Such gradual progression helps in developing a child's logical reasoning and thinking, and thus discovery and perfection since the repetition continues. For instance, activities in the practical life area are a preparatory stage for the sensory activities, which will in return prepare the child for math activities.

By selecting the right Montessori toys for your child’s age and developmental stage, you can provide them with enriching and educational play experiences that support their growth and learning.
