How to Choose the Best Kids Lunch Box: Omie vs b.box Compared

How to Choose the Best Kids Lunch Box: Omie vs b.box Compared

As a mum of three, I can honestly say that choosing the right kids lunch box makes a much bigger difference than I ever expected.

When my eldest started school, I thought any lunch box would do. I quickly learnt that the wrong one leads to soggy sandwiches, yoghurt leaks, frustrated kids who can’t open the lid, and half-eaten lunches coming home untouched.

After trying a few different styles over the years, two brands kept coming up: the Omie lunch box and the b.box lunch box.

Both are popular, and both are well designed — but after packing hundreds (probably thousands!) of lunches for three different children with three very different eating habits, I’ve found that each one suits a different kind of family.

Here’s my honest take.

My Experience with the Omie Lunch Box

The first time I used the Omie lunch box, I understood why so many parents rave about it.

The built-in insulated container is brilliant. It means you can pack warm pasta, fried rice, leftovers, even soup — and it stays warm until lunchtime.

For my middle child, who hates sandwiches, this was a lifesaver.

Instead of packing food I hoped would get eaten, I could pack meals I knew she liked.

That alone made school lunches easier.

What I love about Omie:

  • Great for warm lunches

  • Encourages more meal variety

  • Good for kids who dislike sandwiches

  • Feels sturdy and well made

But I’ll be honest — it isn’t perfect.

It’s heavier than other lunch boxes, and for younger kids it can feel bulky in the school bag. It also takes longer to clean, especially when you’re washing lunch boxes for multiple kids every evening.

And as a busy mum, that matters.

My Experience with the b.box Lunch Box

The b.box lunch box became my go-to for my eldest and youngest.

Why?

Because it’s practical.

It’s easy to pack, easy for kids to open, and the compartments make it simple to send a balanced lunch without needing lots of separate containers.

The fruit holder is one of my favourite features. I can pop in a whole apple or mandarin without cutting it up.

That saves time in the morning — and with three kids, I appreciate anything that saves time.

What I love about b.box:

  • Easy for kids to open independently

  • Great compartments for variety

  • Lighter than Omie

  • Faster to clean

  • Excellent for everyday school lunches

For a standard lunch of sandwiches, fruit, snacks and yoghurt, it works beautifully.

Omie vs b.box: My Honest Comparison

Here’s the practical comparison I wish I had when I started:

So Which One Is Better?

After using both, my honest opinion is this:

For most families, the b.box lunch box is the better all-rounder.

Why?

Because it’s:

  • Easier to clean

  • Easier to pack

  • Lighter for kids

  • Great for everyday school lunches

When you’re packing lunches day after day, convenience matters.

The b.box lunch box is the one I reach for most often because it’s simple and practical.

But the Omie Wins for Hot Lunches

That said, if your child prefers warm food or struggles with cold lunches, the Omie lunch box is absolutely worth it.

For one of my children, it was the difference between lunch being ignored and lunch being eaten.

And if your child is a fussy eater, that can be worth every cent.

So while the b.box lunch box is my favourite overall, the Omie lunch box wins in one very important area:

Hot meals.

No other lunch box does that nearly as well.

My Real Recommendation as a Mum of Three

If I were recommending one lunch box to another parent:

  • Choose b.box if you want a reliable, everyday school lunch box

  • Choose Omie if your child prefers warm lunches or refuses sandwiches

For my family, the b.box lunch box has been the better long-term everyday option.

It’s practical, lightweight, and easy enough for young kids to manage independently.

And when you have multiple kids and busy mornings, practical wins every time.

After years of packing lunches for three kids, I’ve learnt that the “best” lunch box isn’t the one with the most features — it’s the one that works best for your child and for your daily routine.

For everyday ease, I’d choose the b.box lunch box.

For warm lunches and picky eaters, I’d choose the Omie lunch box.

And honestly, if your mornings are hectic like mine, having the right lunch box can make school days run just that little bit smoother — and that’s worth a lot.
